In 1953 the Town of Sunnyvale was founded with the blending together of several small hamlets. Sixty years later, on May 11, 2013 the community both adopted and approved the Town of Sunnyvale to become a Home Rule Charter community.
The Sunnyvale Town Council consists of the mayor and six councilmembers. They are elected town wide to serve two-year, staggered terms of office.
